Scott Welcomme: 16 years ago I was told that I would never be a teacher. I was told to give up. Find another job. Find something else that I was interested in. Because teaching was not for me. And I’m now talking to you through this video. Having taught for over 17 years. And, in many roles, in many schools. Both in the UK, and most recently in Hong Kong. And I’ve been a music teacher, a peripatetic music teacher, private tuition. I’ve been a Deputy Headteacher, an Assistant Headteacher, and, as I’ve said. Taught internationally.
Scott Welcomme: So, I was told that I couldn’t teach. That I would never amount to that. I’d never amount to anything in fact. Um, I practically failed my A levels. Um, I had a tough, tough, trying to get through my degree. I had appendicitis and then developed into Peritonitis. And I remember the journey in the ambulance actually. My Mum said to the ambulance crew. “If my son’s gonna die tonight. I need you to put some music on because I need him to be at peace with music.”
Scott Welcomme: And, uh. Touching story- yeah. I know we all have things we’ve been through. And how to survive. But, what I want to say is If you’ve ever experienced some kind of failure. Or felt like you wanna give up- don’t. Because I had that. And I got told I’d never amount to anything. I got told to ‘give up’. And ‘You’ll never be a teacher, ‘You’re not good enough’. And I remember being absolutely crushed. I was in pieces. And, I didn’t want to….. I wanted to teach. That was my thing. I wanted to be able to help other people. And I, well eventually I went back to the drawing board. I worked in a supermarket. And eventually I did a load of assignments. And I had to go to a tribunal to decide whether I was allowed a ‘second go’ at teaching practice or not.
Scott Welcomme: Luckily, I was granted, well, a third go- ironically. At a different school. And within 2 weeks of that teaching practice. I was told ‘What on earth is the problem?’ I was told ‘Why are these people saying you can’t teach?’ I actually got told ‘Well, we know you have to do your teaching practice, but we’ll sign it off now. Because you are an outstanding teacher!’ ‘And we think you’re gonna be absolutely fantastic in years to come.’ ‘You’ve got the passion, and the enthusiasm here to go very, very far.’ ‘In actual fact. We think you’d be a Senior Leader one day.’
Scott Welcomme: And years later- guess what? I was! Yep. Luck of the draw, a Deputy head position came up at the school I was in. And I had a discussion with the Headteacher. One thing led to another and I was there as Deputy Head for maternity leave. Teaching music alongside doing the day to day running of the school. All of that kind of, leadership stuff. But going from being told I was nothing. And I would never amount to anything. To being a Senior Leader. Well- it just goes to show you. Don’t give up. Okay? Nobody knows what’s round the corner. Nobody knows what’s gonna happen in life. But, we know that if we just keep going. And keep pushing. Then something magical will come our way.
Scott Welcomme: So what’s your story? Have you defied the odds? Have you stayed resilient in the face of a challenge? Have you flipped failure to become the person you are today? I’d love to hear your story. Remember- your takeout could help someone else spring into action. So leave a comment below and give as much detail as possible. I look forward to hearing from you.
