Inspiration from Beethoven & Tchaikovsky. Led Sondheim, & the late, great Bernstein. To pen the timeless, and very apt classic ‘Somewhere’.

For over 60 years, the song brings a message of hope and a reminder that ‘There’s a place for us’. Regardless of background, disability, race, religion or belief.

This is a fine example of the power a song can have. And the knock-on effect it can bring. Like a poem describes a place, a moment in time. When you add music to the mix. It brings it all to life. And you find a place to belong.

Another analogy is from Williams and Ascher. With their timeless inspiration ‘The Rainbow Connection’. The famous opening scene from The Muppet Movie reminds us that there is power in every thought we have. And it’s up to us how we use that power as a force for change, for good.

When you access different styles and genres. You open up the history books of music. You get to explore cultures and traditions you may never get to experience in person. You also get to develop empathy with what it might have been like living in a different time, in different conditions.

The best thing about music is it’s like love. Music is universal, inclusive and holds no barriers. There’s only a difference of opinion of style. And lack of appreciation for others’ cultures, traditions and beliefs. Because as humans, we’ve created them.

There’s only divide and segregation because of the selfish acts deemed triumphant and jubilant. When they’re oppressive and barbaric. There’s only start and end because we’ve said there needs to be. Music brings peace in a time of anger and hatred. Solace and calm on tap. It brings joy and happiness. Excitement and overwhelm (in a good way!).

But for us to find our place to belong. We must nurture, challenge and celebrate everyone’s right to ‘thrive’. Not just survive. Regardless of background, disability, race, religion or belief. Music is there for everyone.

Join the billions round the globe. Who allow music into their lives. And help to inspire the millions more. Who don’t realise the great things that await them!
